Bourbon barrel aged with coconut and turbinado sugar, it was a syrupy cinnamon and maple brown sugar raisin coconut nectar concoction. Perrin Brewing were another new Michigan brewery for me, and although their beers almost always seem too sweet, it really worked for this 15% imperial porter. Also, their Rez Get’s Smashed was one the best caramelly candy tropical fruit imperial IPAs I had all year - UmBongo, orange, bitter simcoe, with a peppery spice on the finish. Witch’s Hat in South Lyon, Michigan served up a sizeable heft of excellent draught beers but one of their most memorable offerings was Thrash Punk: a blond, grassy, tropical coffee Kölsch, heavy on the coffee but doesn’t cross the line (similar in the way Mad Hatter beers take you right to the limit of “too much” without actually going there). Plus, I would have had even more entries in the next category if I didn’t do this. I know this isn’t officially a category but maybe it should be? The UK also saw the release of two big-ass-heavy-hitting double IPA’s this year from Buxton and Cloudwater. Siren Uncle Zester was the year’s best Braggot, hands down - like greek yoghurt with honey, crisp and floral like the bush the bee sucks the honey from. Completely unique, almost like a sessionable black IPA with an added awesome dry roasty complexity. The Kernel really excelled with their Dry Stouts this year, my favourite being the Mosaic version. Mad Hatter’s Tzatziki Sour is obviously going for the “zany” card here, but was one of those rare examples of previously uncharted flavour territory that made me say to myself “gee, I can’t believe no one has tried this already”! And I was greeted with this refreshing boonathon of a Berliner - cucumber, mint, tart, hand lotion and fruit pastille like a sour Warhead, with a bready grassy lager-like finish typical of many Mad Hatter beers. People put a lot of dubious shit in beers these days in attempts to come up with something “original” and “zany”. Probably saving the best for last though, Buxton Far Skyline. Halcyon is still one of the UK’s best IPA’s - clean and crisp with a refined tangy grapefruit bitterness.
